What is a domain name and why do I need one?
A domain name is the web address people type into their browser to visit your website, like www.example.com. It takes the place of the numerical IP address that computers use behind the scenes, giving your site an address that is easy for people to remember and share. You need a domain name if you want to build a professional website, create branded email addresses (like you@yourdomain.com), or simply establish your identity online.
How do I choose a good domain name?
Keep it short, easy to spell, and easy to say out loud. Ideally something under 15 characters. Avoid hyphens and numbers since they are hard to communicate over the phone or in conversation. Go with a .com if it is available, since that is still the most recognized extension. If your first choice is taken, try .net, .org, or one of the newer options like .tech or .store.
What is a domain extension (TLD)?
A domain extension (also called a TLD, or top-level domain) is the suffix at the end of a web address, like .com, .net, or .org. Different extensions can signal different things: .com is the most universal, .org is popular with nonprofits, and newer extensions like .tech or .store can help your domain stand out in a specific niche. We offer over 40 different extensions to choose from.
Can I use my domain for email?
Absolutely. All of our web hosting plans include email support, which means you can create professional email addresses like you@yourdomain.com at no additional cost. Having a branded email address goes a long way toward building trust with customers, clients, or anyone you communicate with. If you just need the domain without hosting, you can also set up email forwarding to route messages to an existing inbox.
What is the difference between domain registration and web hosting?
Domain registration is what secures your web address (like example.com). Web hosting is what provides the server space where your actual website files, databases, and email live. You need both to have a working website. Think of the domain as your address and hosting as the building at that address. View our hosting plans.
How long does it take to register my domain?
Registration itself is nearly instant. Once you complete checkout, your domain is reserved within minutes. The part that takes a little longer is DNS propagation, which is the process of your new domain being recognized across the internet. That typically takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours, depending on your ISP and region. Most domains are fully active within a couple of hours.
What is WHOIS and Domain ID Protection?
WHOIS (pronounced "who is") is a public database that stores the contact details for every registered domain name. By default, your name, address, phone number, and email are visible to anyone who looks up your domain. Domain ID Protection replaces your personal information with proxy details, keeping you safe from spammers, data scrapers, and unwanted solicitations.
What happens when my domain expires?
When a domain expires, it goes through a few stages. First there is a grace period (usually around 30 days) where you can still renew at the standard price. After that, it enters a redemption period where renewal is possible but costs more. Eventually the domain gets released to the public and anyone can register it. Enable auto-renewal in your client area and we will take care of the rest.
What is domain parking?
Domain parking means registering a domain without pointing it to a live website right away. You might do this because you're not ready to build your site yet but want to secure the name, or to protect your brand by owning common variations and misspellings. You can also use parked domains to mirror an existing website: both yourwebsite.com and your-website.com can point to the same hosting account.
Can I sell or transfer my domain?
Yes, your domain is yours to do with as you please. After the standard 90-day hold period (which applies at all registrars, not just Ultra), you are free to sell or transfer your domain to another owner or registrar. We also make it easy to transfer domains into Ultra from other registrars if you want to consolidate everything under one account.
